What is macro?

Photomacrography is usually defined as any magnification at the film plane of 1X (life size) and higher. Anything below life size is considered a “closeup.” Simple diopter lenses placed in front of the normal camera lens, or sometimes a small extension tube between the camera and main lens, usually result in magnifications below a 1:1 ratio.

Macro photography is close-up photography; the classical definition is that the image projected on the "film plane" (i.e., film or a digital sensor) is close to the same size as the subject. On 35 mm film (for example), the lens is typically optimized to focus sharply on a small area approaching the size of the film frame. Most 35mm format macro lenses achieve at least 1:2, that is to say, the image on the film is 1/2 the size of the object being photographed. Many 35mm macro lenses are 1:1, meaning the image on the film is the same size as the object being photographed.

BAHAMAS

Nassau StudentsThis is my second year of teaching at the Islands. The weather and the sourrunding are colorful and life is vibrant. Bahamians are very hospitable people, and I enjoy the policentric aspect of their society. So class participation and collaborative environment involve us in active learning -somewhat different than my experience in the US, where most of my students tend more indidualistic.

Aerial NassauI am pleased to be part of H. Wayne Huizenga School of Business and Entrepreneurship at NOVA Southeastern University. The NSU Bahamas program reaches many talented new professionals at Freeport and Nassau.

Take a look of some recent photographs of my students and friends.

The peruvian Andes mountains, Arequipa, also known as the Ciudad Blanca, and the misterious Nazca Lines.

This trip was a memorable experience. A view of the rain forest near the Nanay river, half and hour from Iquitos, and see me having dinner with "Chonta" at the Sinchicuy lodge. To see more a short slide show click here

Nazca LinesHere is an aerial view of the "Colibri", one of the many Nazca lines embedded on the dry sandi surface of Nazca. These impressive graphics carved on the sand surface are the remains of the Nazca Culture. Located on the Nazca desert in the south of Peru, the markings runs over the Pan American Higway, near the Pacific ocean.

OllaytantamboThis shot is taken on the Ollaytantambo ruins. This espectcular site is my favorite stop when I visit Cuzco. The remains of the Incas impressive solid stone-engineering expands through the Urubamba valley, all the way to Cuzco city.

Find out about my trip to la Meseta de Marcahuasi, many many years ago. On the highlands of Peru, the Marcahuasi rocks lay on an surface of near 4,000 meters in altitude.

Action PhotographyHere is a picture of my son Patrick at the Shrimp Festival at Fernandina Beach!

All my work is currently done on digital format. Canon is my preference for camera body and optics. My flashes and lights vary depending on the assignment. Send me an email to access my photostock. All my shots are posted in my Kodak gallery.

My hobbies include fast-motion photography, water-color painting, swimming, soccer coaching and of course my favorite sport, tennis. As a USTA member I travel the US to see the pros and have fun playing on clay or hard court surfaces. Got a racket?
